DOG INSIGHTS…

The more consistent you are with your cues, the more effective your training will be. If you are using one word for recalling your dog and the rest of your family is using a different word (of even completely different intonation), your dog will have a more difficult time learning the meaning of that particular cue. BE CONSISTENT.

Ask for help. Veterinarians, behaviorists and trainers are support personnel for dog guardians and they offer a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice and guidance in order to expedite working through problem areas with your dog. The faster we work through any issues, the happier you will be and the less opportunity your dog will have to continually practice and therefore reinforce unwanted behaviors.

Meet Spenny!

… a loving, caring, cuddly pup that needs a home of love. He is extremely affectionate with those he trusts and is getting a lot better with those he does not yet know. He needs a person(s) to take the time to make him feel comfortable and safe.

Insight Dog Training is currently fostering ‘Spenny’.
Spenny is a 2 year old, mixed breed rescue from Taiwan. He left his last home because he was exhibiting fear/anxiety relating to strangers and was not compatible with a busy household in which multiple children and their friends were constantly coming and going. While he is actually quite good around children, we are asking that he be adopted by a household without children so that his training goals can be prioritized and maintained.

He has spent the last 2 months working with a trainer and living with 2 other dogs, working on his basic training, confidence building, as well as addressing his fear/anxiety issues with strangers. He has responded favorably to his recent training and we are excited about his progress.

Spenny is fully housetrained. He is a fantastic cuddler who enjoys watching t.v., training, going for walks and playing tug with his favourite toy. He really enjoys the company of other dogs and has thoroughly enjoyed living with his new friends but is still working on playing a little bit more quietly – he has a very ‘good mouth’ but tends to be a little bit noisy when he plays. He walks nicely on leash and is a pleasant walking companion for trail or neighborhood walks and other outings.

Spenny has been a welcomed addition to his recent foster home and will certainly be missed. We anticipate that Spenny will be an absolutely fantastic addition to a quieter, more predictable home and experienced guardians who have some time to spend continuing with training. It is important that Spenny go to a residence in which each person in the home is happy to participate in the training process. Preference will be given to North Shore residents given their proximity to Spenny’s trainer.

Life is One Continuous Mistake
Those are the words of Dogen Zenji, a Zen master, quoted in one of my favorite books, Zen Miracles by Brenda Shoshanna. I repeat them here, because I think they have the power to ease life’s journey for all of us. The message is simple, but profound. Of course you, and everyone around you are [...]
